My Output for this Course
I kept track of my notes in a mediawiki environment. If someone is interested, I can zip it and e-mail it…
Review / Course Impressions
This is a truly enjoyable curse – much more even than M255. It uses Netbeans, a state of the art Java IDE, as its course software, and there are a lot of practical and interesting activities around Java programming.
After having finished this course, together with M255, you get a basic understanding of how to program Java as well as on Object Oriented Programming in a more general sense, and you should be able to find your way around in Java (yes, I mean, to write your own programs).
It even deals with mobile Java applications (e. g. for cellphones), but also with security, network programming, GUI programming etc. The course texts are pretty well written and quite easy to follow; most concepts are introduced with practical work that makes them more transparent and understandeable.
The only downfall probably is the examination; you have to know quite a lot “by heart”, as you are not allowed to take much Java references with you to the exam. However, it turned out that most important methods and object references are again given in the exam’s texts, so I learned a little too much for the exam.
Overall I could recommend this course to everybody who wants to learn Java (or just understand the whole thing about OOP).
Final Words
I completed this course with a “Distinction” – overall examinable score (OES) was 89, overall continuous assessment score (OCAS) was 99.
