Die NZZ am Sonntag hat jeweils eine Seite, worauf sie sich der “Computerei” widmet.

Heute zu lesen:

• Warum Skype so gut ist und es jede/r nutzen sollte
• Was man tun kann, um seine Privatsphäre in Facebook zu schützen

Beide Artikel für sich genommen sind schon problematisch, aber auf einer Seite zusammengefasst, sind sie beinahe schon Satire.

Skype hat in der Vergangenheit mit Intransparenz und Datensicherheitsbedenken von sich reden gemacht. Es lohnt sich, die damals geschriebenen Kommentare noch einmal zu lesen – und die verschiedenen ausfindig gemachten Seiten noch einmal zu besuchen. Zusammengefasst: Die Skype-Software ist closed source, das heisst, niemand kann nachvollziehen, was sie ganz GENAU tut. Einige findige Hacker haben herausgefunden, dass Skype offenbar aufgrund von Sicherheitsproblemen einige Downtimes hatte, und ebenfalls verschiedene Dateien auf den Benutzer-PCs ausspioniert. Wenn man bedenkt, dass Skype zu eBay gehört (welche ja auch imme mal wieder Datensicherheits-Probleme haben, auf der anderen Seite aber natürlich an den Daten ihrer Nutzer interessiert sind), tun sich hier schon irgendwie Abgründe auf…

Der Artikel über Facebook ist im Prinzip völlig redundant; natürlich kann man auf dieser Plattform seine Privatsphäre schützen, also sicherstellen, dass nicht alle ALLES, was man dort so veröffentlicht, lesen können. Auf der anderen Seite ist völlig klar, dass Facebook über Nutzerdaten verfügt, welche vermutlich Millionen wert sein dürften. Selbst ebenfalls auf Facebook, wäre es für mich ein Leichtes, einiges an relativ intimen Daten, inkl. Interessen, Wohnorten, Telefonnummern, Beziehungen, “Top 5 Movies” usw. über meine Freunde (und andere, welche ihr Profil offen haben) herauszufinden, zu katalogisieren und dann gezielt weiterzuverwenden. Facebook hat immer wieder betont, dass die Firma nichts dergleichen anstrebt; als kürzlich die T&C geändert wurden, war der Aufschrei enorm und die Medienresonanz beträchtlich (den Imageschaden wird das Unternehmen so schnell nicht mehr los).

Was ich sagen will – in Summe spielt es wohl keine Rolle, ob ich meine Daten in Facebook vermeintlich schütze, denn die wahre Gefahr geht vermutlich von den Unternehmen selbst aus.

Was weiss Google über mich? Was weiss Facebook über mich? Wer protokolliert meine Skype-Gespräche mit? Wie transparent bin ich, wenn man mich übers Netz verfolgt? Man sollte mit den eigenen Daten stets sehr sorgfältig umgehen – und die NZZ hat leider in beiden Artikeln die wahre Problematik nicht erwähnt.

Well, if this does not say everything, I don’t know…

I already blogged about why I will switch away from Skype…. ironically, I would be more than willing to accept a downtime like it happened a few days back – every software has its bugs, and as long as they get fixed, what’s the deal? As long as you get a pay-back…

But the things that are explained in the above cited forums entry are just too scary – why should Skype read my /etc/passwd? My /etc/group? Come on, Skypies, isn’t there any rational explanation behind this?

In fact, doesn’t Skype belong to the eBay-group? What the … is going on here??

After yesterday’s post, I thought some more on my IM situation. I finally installed Miranda Instant Messenger on Windows – because Yahoo’s messenger would not install and the ICQ software is waaayyyy to resource-heavy. Now, I have one fine program for everything, and it’s even open source…

After the massive disruption over the weekend, I read several resources about Skype – and decided that this closed-source crap has nothing to do on my box. I therefore switched back to plain old IM – using my almost forgotten ICQ account (8624280) and Yahoo ID (tkhobbes, what else…)

Within Gentoo Linux, I use kopete (which, btw, needs the “yahoo” USE-flag in order to connect to Yahoo IM infrastructure), and on Windows, I just use ICQ and the Yahoo messenger.

Anyone who used to chat with me via Skype – go on, deinstall the software and use some IM… and if you REALLY need VoIP, use something like Gizmo.

KDE took about 5 hours to compile… not bad!
Next step is to emerge my favourite browser – Firefox!
To do so, I first add this line to /etc/portage/package.use:
www-client/mozilla-firefox moznoxft mozdevelop mozbranding
Now, let’s emerge – and in the meantime, configure KDE a little. I won’t go too much into detail, becaue a lot of course is due to temporary moods and stuff; but some things are important, like for example the displaying of fonts.
In the control-center, select appearance, then fonts; then set “Kantenglättung für Schriftdarstellung verwenden” (sorry about that – my KDE is now fully in German, and I have no idea about how this could be translated to english; it’s the first checkbox after the font selections and has another button labelled “Einrichten”, so probably “Settings”, next to it). In the settings, click “Use Sub-Pixel-Hinting” and select “RGB” and as hinting style, select “complete” (again, its German, it says “Vollständig” there – it’s just the last option to select).
After a restart of KDE, all fonts look nice. I also selected the Bitstream Vera fonts everywhere.

Now, something I noted is that konqueror crashes a lot. I re-emerge it, therefore.
Also, I need some more stuff – here are some programs that are needed urgently and are therefore emerged:

• vmware-player
• skype
• yakuake
• kssh
• acroread
• aspell-de
• kchmviewer
• kmldonkey
• k3b

This gives quite a list to emerge – so, let’s do it and wait…

In the meantime, I configure firefox, kmail, import my addresses into kaddressbook and import my akregator settings, configure kopete for my jabber-account and import my knode settings.
Now, after kssh, yakuake and kmldonkey are emerged, they are configured, also, I add a menu entry for my virtual XP environment (which I have copied from the old box); in the meantime, I emerge koffice-meta.
Skype does not work correctly – I can hear other people talking, but they can’t hear me… time to fiddle around with the microphone… next time…
